My good friend, the cognitive scientist John Vervaeke, set me a challenge to argue that Star Trek is the mythos the modern world needs.

It took over 2 hours. This is part 1.

There’s a more serious debate under the fun discussion. John is famous for his thinking on the “meaning crisis”. And the question we are examining, through the lense of Star Trek, is how far stories can contribute to solving that crisis.

I think Star Trek has given more meaning, to more people in today’s world, than major religions. My job as a critic is to understand what that meaning is. Why do we care about Star Trek? What does it mean to us?

I unpack a lot of the answers with John Vervaeke’s help.
