“Our content is underused”

“One of the other real strengths of Warner Bros. is we talk about the great IP that Warner Bros. owns,” Zaslav said. “But, for us, the challenge is that our content, our great IP — Harry Potter, DC, Lord of the Rings — that content has been underused.”

No, Mr Zaslev. The challenge is that folks like you degrade art into content, IP and franchises so you can pimp it at the Goldman Sachs “Communacopia”.

“Our content is underused” If I tried to write a satire of the executives at the top of the Corporate Entertainment Complex, I would not be able to match what actually comes out of their mouths.

This is the mindset that gave the world Fake Tolkien. It doesn’t even see art. It just sees content. And if the content has been underused, we better damn well use it! Except Jeff Bezos snuck in and used it first.

People are still too forgiving of this nonsense. Fake Tolkien was a travesty from the moment it was announced. But too many people were willing to “give it a chance” because it “might be ok”. That’s like a hardened criminal showing up for a date with your daughter and saying “hey, they might get on”.

I don’t care about Harry Potter particularly but you have to give JK some respect for keeping enough of the rights to stop WarnerBros “using” poor Harry more than they have. Superman is supposed to be indestructible but WB have thoroughly destroyed his charcter.

And now they’re invading Middle Earth. The WarnerBros orks are rampaging over Tolkiens mythic landscape so they can cut down the trees and turns the whole world into endless crappy streaming shows and franchised video games.

But, don’t worry. One of those crappy Fake Tolkien shows might have a few mediocre moments of “entertainment”. Then it will all be ok.
