Why Elves, Damo?
The interesting thing about elves is that we aren’t elves
“Why Elves, Damo?”
It’s a valid question. There are many good reasons to hate elves. Smug buggers. If ever a group of beings deserve to be told to “check your privilege” it’s elves.
So why write about them?
The interesting thing about elves is that we aren’t elves. We are not immortal. Quite the opposite. Humans are dying even as I write this. Poof! There goes another one.
Humans have been telling stories about upgraded, immortal versions of ourselves for a long time. The Vidyahara of Hindu mythos and the Irish Tuatha De Danan. The Culture of Iain M. Banks are a nice contemporary example.
It’s a nice dream. That in a magical world, or a parallel dimension, or the far future. There are people who are like us but who do not have age, sicken and die. Who doesn’t love that idea?
But thinking about what we are not is also a way to better understand what we are. It’s hard to consider our doomed mortal existence. Elves are a friendly…perhaps too friendly…guide to the boundaries of our existence.
Liandel of Ulverholme, by the end of The Ocean of Story episode 1, has just been hurled from the eternal into the real. This is quite a standard opening for an immortal. Lia has been longing for change. But that change is all about to get a little too…real.
