Why The Creator matters
RELEASE THE EDWARDS CUT
RELEASE THE EDWARDS CUT!!
The Creator isn’t a good science fiction movie, but it was damn close to being a great one.
I think the extremely fast plotting could have worked, and the occasional jarring transitions between acts could be ignored, but the incredibly contrived final act basically crippled The Creator.
But at its heart The Creator is attempting a higher kind of storytelling, the same kind that made 2001 and Blade Runner great science fiction.
It fell short. But it was a true attempt, and at a time when cinema is packed with “product” from the corporate entertainment complex that has no aim but to maximise shareholder value, that makes The Creator, even in its broken state, a movie that matters.
I don’t usually speculate on how a film could be changed. But the version of The Creator we got feels a lot like the broken version of Blade Runner that first hit cinemas. That makes me hope there might be an Edwards cut to come in future.
And, yes, I decided to make the video essay on The Creator. Link below.
PS — I had to redact some audio from this version to avoid triggering the corporate advertiser sensitivity algorithm
